Juris Doctor, 2008

University of Kansas
Bachelor of Arts, English, 2005

Mr. Hayes has had experience in the field of editing and publishing since 2008.  After graduating from Georgetown University Law Center, he worked as an assistant editor in the Publications department of the American Association for Justice (AAJ) until July 2009.  At AAJ, Mr. Hayes worked as part of a five-person team on the AAJ Law Reporter, Products Liability Law Reporter, and Professional Negligence Law Reporter.  These monthly publications strove to present technical and complex, legal decisions in a clear and accessible manner, to which Mr. Hayes contributed copyediting, proofreading, and substantive edits.

Mr. Hayes also interviewed member attorneys for full-length articles, contributed monthly features, and corresponded with contributing authors for AAJ’s Trial magazine.  In addition, he updated and maintained online content for all three publications, drafting and formatting monthly emails sent to AAJ members and the Publications section of the AAJ Web site.

After several months as a freelance writer, editor, and researcher, Mr. Hayes became a
full-time contractor at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) through SRA International, where he performed editing and writing duties until April 2011.  His job at DOE focused on the research and construction of 56 publicly available memos, ranging from 4 to 40 pages that detailed the impact of DOE Recovery Act funds on each state.

At PAI, Mr. Hayes edits and formats a variety of documents, including guidelines, handbooks, records, reference manuals, reports, standards, presentations, and Web pages.  He helps the authors create documents that accurately convey information using proper English; the appropriate style standards, including the U.S. Government Printing Office Style Manual, Federal Register Document Drafting Handbook, and PAI in house style; and the FAA Plain Language Program.
